Athletics
Shooting a sporting event is the opposite of a sitting. There's no arranging the light, no asking subjects to hold still, and definitely no second takes. On the field or on the sidelines, I'm working with whatever the weather and venue give me, reading the game a beat ahead and trying to be in the right spot with the right lens before the moment goes down. Most of the shoot is anticipation, knowing where the ball is going, which athlete is about to spring, and when a face is about to tell the whole story.
What keeps me invested is that the same things I look for in a portrait still show up in the middle of the action. The strain in a sprinter's jaw, the stillness of a pitcher before the windup, the long walk back to the bench after a strikeout. A fraction of a second is all you get, and when it lands, the photograph carries the noise, sweat, and effort of the whole day in a single frame. These are ten of my favorites.
